Water Damage: The First 30 Minutes
Print this checklist or save it as a PDF to your phone. When water strikes, these safe steps can keep a small Miami leak from becoming a major loss.

24/7 Emergency
(866) 688-0301Do these 6 things first
- 1
Get people and pets to safety
Move everyone away from standing water, active leaks, exposed wiring, and sagging ceilings. If a ceiling is bulging or water is near the electrical panel, leave the area.
- 2
Stop the water source — if it is safe
Shut off the fixture valve or the main water valve, but only if you can reach it without walking through hazardous or contaminated water.
- 3
Cut power to the affected area
Turn off electricity to wet rooms from a dry, safe spot. If the panel itself may be wet, do not touch it — call an electrician or 911.
- 4
Document everything before you move it
Photograph and take video of every affected room, the water line, the source, and damaged contents with serial numbers — before cleanup or removal.
- 5
Protect what you safely can
Move undamaged valuables to a dry area only if the path is safe. Lift small furniture off wet flooring and blot, do not rub, wet upholstery.
- 6
Call for emergency extraction
Call Ultra Mold Water Restoration at (866) 688-0301. Tell us the source, rooms affected, whether water is still active, and any sewage or building-access issues.
Do not
- Use household or shop vacuums on standing water
- Run fans or appliances near wet electrical connections
- Walk through sewage or floodwater and into clean rooms
- Throw out damaged items before photographing them
- Wait for the floor to “look dry” — hidden moisture stays behind slabs, cabinets, and walls
Document for insurance
- Every affected room, the visible water line, and the water source
- Damaged contents with brand, model, and serial numbers
- The date/time you discovered it, shut off the water, and called for help
- Receipts, estimates, moisture readings, and adjuster communications in one folder
Water spreads by the minute. When in doubt, call.
